The Blue I Love To Use in My Artwork: Yves Klein Blue

Updated: Apr 16, 2024

Yves Klein Blue is alluring & beautiful. I love using it.

This particular shade of ultramarine blue, immortalized by the renowned French artist Yves Klein, captivated the world with its bold, mesmerizing presence. It is alluring, but I can't explain why. There's something about Yves Klein Blue that makes me want to reach out and touch it, engage with it. It's compelling. I love using it in my work.

Yves Klein Blue - an Illuminating Story

Yves Klein, a visionary artist, sought to transcend the conventional boundaries of artistic expression, and his captivating International Klein Blue (IKB) became emblematic of his avant-garde approach. This radiant, deep blue hue, with its almost mystical quality, has since left an indelible mark on the realm of contemporary art. Klein's use of this intense blue was a testament to his belief in transcending the tangible and embracing the infinite, and in doing so, he elevated color to a realm of spiritual resonance.

The Quest for the Perfect Blue

Though I love Yves Klein Blue, finding this color paint is not easy. When I work with a color I tend to keep it out and use it in a variety of pieces. Yves Klein Blue has found a place in many of my pieces as you will see in my gallery and shop.

There is no other blue hue out there like it. Believe me, I tried to find a suitable blue. I went to a reputable art supply store in Los Angeles and asked if they had a Yves Klein Blue paint. They had not heard of such a color and when they Googled it, they said, "Oh, it's just ultramarine blue." The art world disagrees. Yves Klein is not just ultramarine blue. I say this adamantly since I purchased at least ten different ultramarine blue paints from a variety of art suppliers. I did a side-by-side comparison using various paintbrushes. None of them had the effect of Yves Klein Blue. I finally found the one supplier who is licensed to use the formula. It resonates in my pieces. I am fascinated by its depth, vibrancy, and the indescribable emotional impact it carries.
